Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
At Quail Valley Family Dental, we are committed to ensuring that your visit with us is an exceptional one. We offer safe and reliable sedation options to cater to our anxious patients. Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a very common sedative used in the dental community. It offers the advantage of working very quickly, as it puts the patient in a very relaxed state after taking a few deep breaths. In addition to providing its analgesic effects very quickly, it offers the convenience of no lingering side effects once no longer being administered. This relives the patient of the burden of finding a family member or friend to drive them to and from their appointment. Patients have the ability to drive themselves.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Extended procedures may require a more extensive form of sedation. In that case, we may recommend oral conscious sedation. In this scenario, we will prescribe a sedative to be taken in the office prior to the onset of treatment. Although patients become very relaxed, they are often still able to communicate with the treating doctor. For the maximum analgesic effect and safety precautions, patients prescribed this method of sedation are asked to arrive to their appointment on an empty stomach. Unlike nitrous oxide, sedatives tend to linger in the bloodstream even after the appointment is complete; therefore, a designated driver is required.
For the severely anxious patients and extremely extensive procedures, we will combine the two methods.
